Ceiling Damp

Ceiling damp patches are caused when moisture is able to accumulate below the surface. The most common cause of this type of damp is condensation, although leaks in pipes or gaps in your roof can also cause moisture to soak into walls and ceilings.

What causes damp in ceilings?

Understanding the cause of a damp patch on your ceiling is the first stage in preventing it getting worse, and leading to damage to the material, or creating an environment where mould or mildew can form.

There are many other causes though, such as:

  • Broken or cracked windows
  • Upstairs toilets with clogged sinks, shower drains, and overflowing toilets
  • Leaky radiators with water losses (this may be dangerous and should be inspected by professionals)
  • Condensation of water
  • Plumbing damage and burst pipes (see common causes of pipe bursts here)
  • A blocked guttering system that isn’t draining rainwater effectively
  • Excessive moss and algae growing under the tiles causing dampness
  • Chimneys, especially older ones which aren’t damp-proof.

How do I control damp in my ceiling?

These four tips will help you prevent attic condensation and resulting moisture damage to your home.

  • Check your vents.
  • Use humidifiers minimally during the winter.
  • Ensure you have enough attic insulation.
  • Make sure your attic has adequate ventilation.
