Penetrating Damp

Penetrating damp, otherwise known as lateral damp, is the development of moisture through the walls and roof or below ground area of a building. Like most cases of damp, if left untreated it can cause problems for the structure and significant damage to the fabric of your home.

How do you know if you have penetrating damp?

There is a straightforward way to spot the signs of penetrating damp. Some of these symptoms include:

  • Discoloured wallpapers or wall surfaces.
  • Disintegration and blistering of plaster.
  • Localised damp stains that appear randomly on ceilings and other concrete surfaces. Where the damp has persisted for more extended periods, you can experience a musky odour and even spot the growth of mould.

Any of the signs mentioned above should be reason enough to inspect your home for defects.

As time goes on, the extent of damp damage in your interior walls becomes more evident. During winter months, this damage is a lot more extensive. The water trapped in the walls freeze and expand, causing flaking of lifted paintwork.

Penetrating damp can be caused by rainfall that seeps into buildings with poorly maintained and/or repaired roofs, blocked gutters and other water entry points.

It is easy to spot this type of damp, especially after heavy rainfalls by the large stains left on the ceiling, floors, walls, and interior paintwork.
