Floors can easily suffer from moisture ingress otherwise known as penetrating damp. Damp in concrete floors are much more difficult to treat than having damp walls. The reason for this is that concrete is a very porous material meaning that water can rise through capillaries and therefore lead the property to suffer from having damp floors.
There are simple steps that can be carried out if the floors are affected by damp above the ground such as external defects (for example pipes and gutters). To fix this problem would require isolating the source of the moisture problem and then taking the necessary steps to help the floor dry out.
If your property is suffering from rising damp which then rises through to the surface of the concrete then this is a more complicated procedure to fix. This is less common in new buildings as damp-proof membranes are required at the initial construction phase to prevent rising damp.
The plastic membranes are installed onto sand blinding before the application of the concrete. If this damp proofing method is installed correctly then this will provide protection against groundwater rising damp up from the concrete.
This unfortunately, in most cases, did not happen in older buildings where there was no damp proof membrane in place and the concrete floors would, therefore, be vulnerable to damp problems.
